Hamilton: How the Musical Remixes American History
When: Thursday, June 6 / 6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. Where: Locust Grove Louisville has Hamilton-mania! As this Tony-Award winning musical rolls into town, its crafty lyrics, hip-hop tunes, and big, bold story have even rejuvenated interest in the real lives and true histories that Hamilton: An American Musical puts center stage. In this talk, historian Dr. Richard Bell explores this musical phenomenon to reveal what its success tells us about the marriage of history and show-business. We’ll learn what this amazing musical got right and got wrong about Alexander Hamilton, the American Revolution, and the birth of the United Sates and about why that matters. We’ll examine some of the choices Hamilton’s creators made to simplify, dramatize, and humanize the complicated events and stories on which the show is based. We’ll also talk about Hamilton’s cultural impact: what does its runaway success reveal about the stories we tell each other about who we are and about the nation we made? Admission: $15/$12 for Locust Grove members. Reservations are required; call 502-897-9845. One drink ticket included; cash bar available.

Scott Smith, a Hurricane, WV native, is the artist-in-residence at Main & Clay in Louisville’s Butchertown neighborhood. When describing his sound to Insider Louisville’s Sara Havens, he says, “I’d say I’m very much […] geographically pegged. I love older country music, soul, and blues – so for me, the music sounds like Charley Pride and Bill Withers sat down and had a conversation.” Scott was also a fast friend of the Forecastle Foundation, volunteering his time and his naturally awesome attitude to help spread our environmental message at the festival last year. Butchertown Grocery chef Bobby Benjamin will offer a special menu of his favorite late night bites throughout the evening, to be paired with beverage director Nic Christiansen's Four Roses cocktail specials. As you may know, this house belonged to our late parents, Diana and Robert Brown, for over 50 years, where we grew up. In 1971, Canonero II won the Kentucky Derby, and our parents hosted the owners and jockey at our house. Continuing in this Derby tradition, this year we plan to rent our house to visitors to Louisville during the Derby Festival, April 22, 2019 – May 6, 2019. We anticipate up to six possible guests but not more than eight. There are technically five off-street parking spots, which should be well over what they would need. Bonnie will be available for any emergency contact on her mobile phone during this period. We are holding a meeting to discuss our plans on Wednesday, March 20, 2019 at 7:00 p.m. at 2328 Valletta Lane. At this meeting, we will explain our proposal and answer any questions you might have. Very truly yours, Bonnie M. Brown (502) 558-6071 mobile Jennifer A. Brown

Shining A Light: (The) Many Faces of Homelessness Exhibition Opening
“Shining a Light” is an annual international photography contest and exhibition hosted by the Muhammad Ali Center which leveraged its existing capacity to increase awareness around issues of human rights and social justice on local, national, and international stages in 2013. Annually, the “Shining a Light” contest focuses on an aspect of gender equality, curates an exhibition of those photographs that opens in conjunction with International Women’s Day every year, and offers educational programming about the selected topic in order to enhance the audiences’ experience. This year, for the 6th annual contest and exhibition, the Muhammad Ali Center has chosen to focus on homeless women and the nuances of the issues they face daily. To examine the complexity of this subject, the annual contest asked photographers around the world, both professional and amateur, to look around them, in their cities or on their travels, to aim their lens at an issue that is in our own backyards. Answering this call were nearly 300 submissions from countries all over the world: Baku, Turkey, Poland, Brazil, Germany, Canada, Belgium, Australia, Spain, Britain, Nigeria, and America. Each photograph chosen for exhibition has a unique story to tell.“Shining a Light: (The) Many Faces of Homeless Women” will open March 8, 2019. NOTE: Access to the exhibition will be included in regular admission price. Learn more...
"Long Time Coming" Film Screening
In celebration of Black History Month, the Muhammad Ali Center presents a film screening of "Long Time Coming." In 1955 when racial segregation defined the south, two groups of twelve-year old boys stepped onto a baseball field in an act of cultural defiance that would change the course of history. “Long Time Coming” was created to both honor the barrier-breakers and to stimulate honest and constructive conversation on race in America. The film highlights a moment in history where courage overcame destructive social norms to establish a better way, together.NOTE: This event is free and open to the public. While the event is free, you must RSVP here before the screening: Learn more... Register here

Conocimiento 2019: Diverse Leadership, The Invisible Line that Divides and Unites Us
Conocimiento 2019 will be offered by Dr. Juan Carlos Arauz from E3- Education, Equity, Excellence from San Francisco California. This is a culturally relevant leadership development workshop for diverse student populations. This programs aims to build community, foster belongingness, and strengthen each organization’s capacity using popular education pedagogy. Our aim is to identify experiences that have developed one’s own story that has come to define our realities. Conocimiento Principle by Roberto Vargas (Provida Leadership): The Conocimiento Principle recognizes that common unity begins with the process of shared awareness and understanding, or conocimiento. In essence, we must learn the basics of who each person is before we can evolve the trust and bonding required for unity and shared group power. With this principle in mind, all group efforts balance the focus on a task with a conscious effort to maximize relationships of shared awareness among participants. Meetings are begun by communicating the equal values of becoming community and accomplishing the task. There are shared introductions, the modeling of "who am I" by the facilitator, and the use of smaller groups or even dyads (two’s) for doing conocimiento or working on the task. The Conocimiento Principle emphasizes the necessity of consciously creating community within the group to heighten the potential for personal growth and shared action. Increased bonding and trust in the group can lead to deeper sharing, greater insights, increased commitment to action, and the inspiration of feeling that you are greater than one person – you are part of a community. Breakfast and lunch will be served!

Sebastian Maniscalco
Venue: Brown Theatre at The Kentucky Center The comedian, actor, and best-selling author Sebastian Maniscalco is giving a concert in our city! Let's face it: in our increasingly tepid, polite, and politically correct culture we need more people like Sebastian Maniscalco. Forever able to seize the moment, never failing to speak his mind, always telling it like it is, this is one man who isn't afraid to put it all out there. Yes, the Chicago-area born, Italian-immigrant-raised comedian behind wildly successful network specials including 2016's Why Would You Do That?, 2014's Aren't You Embarrassed?, and 2012's What's Wrong With People?, is that little voice within all our heads. The one we are too timid to unleash. Maniscalco is bearing the burden of our bizarre and head-scratching modern-day world. (From: sebastianlive.com) Get Tickets: http://bit.ly/2DYwcPv...
