Owen. The event will take place at the Charlie Vettiner Golf Course’s clubhouse and is open to the public. Mr. Owen served as a Head Golf Professional within the Louisville Metro Parks System for 37 years. His leadership over the years led to the growth and development of the Charlie Vettiner Golf Course into one of the best courses in Kentucky as well as helping to grow its youth program into one of the largest in the community. What: Dedication of memorial plaque honoring Carl E Owen Who:  Councilmen Stuart Benson, Councilman Robin Engel, Larry Jones, Skipper Marten as well as family and friends of Carl E. Owen. Owen graduated from Shawnee High School in 1957 where he lettered in both Golf and Basketball. He attended the University of Kentucky on a golf scholarship. Carl turned professional in 1961 and began his career as an assistant golf pro under Fithian Shaw at Owensboro Country Club. His golf career was briefly interrupted in 1962, when he was drafted into the U.S. Army.  Carl served two years of active duty and four years in the Army Reserve. After he finished his two years of active duty, he was hired as an assistant to Gordon Leishman at Idlehour Country Club in Lexington, KY.  He worked at Idlehour from 1964 to 1967. In May, 1967 he was hired by Charlie Vettiner as the Head Golf Professional of the new 9 hole Chenoweth Golf Course.  Carl remained as the Head PGA Golf Professional for over 37 years until his retirement in 2004.  His dedication to the youth, the golf course, & all who played here was fulfilling & exemplary. Carl had many accomplishments during his career, but his greatest joy was the development of young juniors that worked for him & the junior golfers in his programs. This is Carl’s lasting legacy.  At one time, Charlie Vettiner had the largest junior program in the Metropolitan area. He taught these youth much more than golf.  He was their teacher, their mentor, and a positive role model.  He was a fill in parent and head cheerleader to them all.  He taught them that love and respect for their families, along with their education, were paramount.  Some of these players went on to play collegiate golf, some won major tournaments, some even became head PGA professionals.

Psychedelic Medicine & Cultural Trauma Workshop

This day-and-a-half workshop focuses on the political and social factors that impact trauma and healing. Community leaders will join trainees for this workshop to engage in dialogue about the social, political, cultural, and historical causes of trauma, as well as to discuss barriers to acceptance of MDMA-assisted psychotherapy in communities of color while envisioning ways forward. These dialogues will feature a range of interdisciplinary presenters, as well as draw on the personal expertise of MAPS study therapists of color and participants, to co-create a discussion-based day. The workshop will consist of short presentations, dialogues, breakout groups, and somatic body-centered practices interspersed. Saturday evening will involve storytelling, music, dancing, and opportunities for processing and decompression. This event precedes the Therapy Training Event for Communities of Color hosted by the MDMA Therapy Training Program in Louisville, Kentucky. Muhammad Ali Humanitarian Awards

The Muhammad Ali Humanitarian Awards were created in 2013 as a way to publicly recognize and celebrate the greatness of people from around the world. This annual fundraising gala honors people who are making significant contributions toward securing peace, social justice, human rights, and/or social capital in their communities and on a global basis. Each year, the Ali Center pays tribute to a number of high profile “seasoned humanitarians” who are named as Muhammad Ali Humanitarian Awardees. In addition, we honor six young adults, age 30 and under, who are serving as advocates, activists, and role models in ways that are ultimately transforming communities and bringing about positive change in the world. Each of these six winners are recognized for one of Muhammad Ali’s Six Core Principles: Confidence, Conviction, Dedication, Giving, Respect, and Spirituality. Proceeds raised during the Muhammad Ali Humanitarian Awards support educational initiatives, community programming, and on-site exhibitions. This year's Awards will be held at the Louisville Marriott Downtown.Learn more......

Eastern Parkway Study Public Meeting

Eastern Parkway study to look at updating the corridor First public meeting to be held July 11   LOUISVILLE, Ky. (June 27, 2019) – The first public meeting will be held July 11 to collect public input to a project aimed at updating the Eastern Parkway corridor between Cherokee Park and Crittenden Drive to make it safer and more user friendly to motorists, transit users, pedestrians and bicyclists while improving drainage and landscaping. The Eastern Parkway Transportation Study is being funded through a $500,000 federal Transportation Alternatives Program grant awarded to Louisville in 2017 and matched with Kentucky Transportation Cabinet toll credits. The study will consider such elements as sidewalk and curb improvements, shared use pedestrian paths, bike connectivity and other complete streets alternatives aimed at accommodating the transportation modes of all users of the corridor. Frederick Law Olmstead’s firm designed Eastern Parkway more than 100 years ago as a recreational traffic link to one of Louisville’s biggest parks. That design did not contemplate what is now up to 17,000 motorists using the road each day along with the walkers and bicyclists. The study is aimed at updating the parkway to better accommodate all modern users while being respectful of the original parkway characteristics. Completion of the study is anticipated in the summer of 2020. It will include recommendations on design elements and associated cost estimates. The Gresham Smith engineering and design firm is leading the study under the direction of Public Works project manager John Swintosky. Public meeting will be: July 11, 2019 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Audubon Traditional Elementary School Gymnasium 1051 Hess Lane Louisville KY 40217
