In Other Words - A Free Poetry Workshop, Exhibit, & Reading

In celebration of the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment and the 55th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act, Louisville Literary Arts presents a free poetry writing workshop in partnership with The Frazier History Museum’s Kentucky Suffrage Exhibition (opening 2020). Over the course of three 2-hour sessions, workshop participants will work closely with historical materials from the voting rights eras and explore the radical and collaborative language of identity. Participants will read contemporary writing by Adrienne Rich, Ada Limón, Audre Lorde, Denise Levertov, Julie Marie Wade, Niina Pollari, and others and discuss how poems critically engage with and celebrate their political contexts through form, voice, and syntax. Writing exercises and workshop discussions will focus on issues of identity, heritage, and the fight for equal rights, and participants will explore their unique voice in response, (re)discovering their own legacies of resistance and change. The workshops will end with an exhibit of participant poetry and a public reading of finished work on Oct. 23, 7:00PM at Flight Deck Gallery. Workshop series and reading are FREE & open to the public. Workshop registration required.Learn more.......
