World War Women - the Unsung Heroines of World War II

Honor Flight Bluegrass announced today that it is presenting a series of short plays, "World War Women - the Unsung Heroines of World War II" in cooperation with Treyton Oak Towers and History At Play from Boston, Massachusetts.  The dinner and play will take place at Treyton Oak Towers on Friday, December 14 at 6:00 P.M. Treyton Oaks is located at 211 West Oak Street, and complimentary parking is available on site.   The cost for the evening is $60 per person, including dinner, sales tax and fees.  Tickets are available at Honor Flight Bluegrass/History At Play.  (https://ift.tt/2qUdu4d)              Proceeds will support Honor Flight Bluegrass' mission of taking WWII veterans, along with those from the Korean conflict and Vietnam War to Washington on a one day trip to visit their respective memorials.  The all-volunteer organization has provided the trip to over 2,000 veterans in the ten years of its existence.             "World War Women"  debuted on Pearl Harbor Day in 2017.  Created by Judith Kalaora of Boston, it commemorates women's lesser known contributions to  military and civilian forces by telling the stories of five women: Vera Atkins - Organized the Special Operations Executive (SOE) of the British Intelligence Agency Virginia Hall - the first female spy sent to Nazi-occupied France to organize the Resistance Jane Fawcett - worked at Bletchley Park in England to descramble the German Enigma machine Ann Baumgartner - Woman Air Force Service Pilot (WASP) and first woman to fly a jet plane Jacqueline Cochran - organized and managed the WASP program and  was one of the most highly decorated pilots in the world.             Running time for "Women at War" is approximately 75 minutes, and the performance will be followed by a discussion with Ms. Kalaora.  According to her web site, she recognized that her audiences always "wanted to know more about the people portrayed," and the discussion provides an opportunity for the audience to do so.  Additional information on "World War Women" and History At Play is available at historyatplay.com   Additional information on the December 14th event is available at https://ift.tt/2FxuiIu                In announcing plans for the Dinner and Play, event chair, Keith Coombs said, "this is a unique opportunity to enjoy dinner, hear about these unsung heroines and engage in conversation about 'Women at War.'"  He continued, "Honor Flight Bluegrass is the perfect charity to benefit because of its efforts to honor WWII veterans - men and women."             Honor Flight Bluegrass Chairman, Jeff Thoke said, "I encourage everyone to join us on December 14th for 'Women at War' which details just a few of their experiences in WWII.  It's especially meaningful since Louisville has a rich WWII heritage with the nurses' training at Bowman Field and  because WASPS flew out of the field."  He continued, "attending 'Women at War' helps Honor Flight Bluegrass continue its mission of taking veterans at no cost to them to visit their memorials in Washington, DC."
